Super Smash Bros. Fighters – Fire Emblem series – 06 Corrin

In the Fire Emblem series: Fire Emblem Fates (2015)
In the Super Smash Bros. series: Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS & Wii U (2014)

Boxing Ring Title: Blood of Dragons

Theme Song: Lost in Thoughts All Alone (Ultimate Remix)

Corrin is the main protagonist of "Fire Emblem Fates." Corrin leads a pretty happy life, but soon gets involved in a massive war between two kingdoms.

Corrin also serves as the player's avatar, and as such can be customized to the player’s liking. The player can choose Corrin's gender, age (teenager, young adult, older adult), facial appearance and hair color. They can then input Corrin's Birthday, change Corrin's name, modify their voice to one of three options (three for female, three for male) and choose Corrin's best and worst stat. Super Smash Bros. goes with the female Corrin’s default look. (Young adult)

Corrin was born in Hoshido. At a very young age, she was kidnapped by the king of Nohr. Afterwards, she spent most of her life in the Northern Fortress, where she was isolated from everyone, though her new Nohrian siblings - which include her older brother Xander, her older sister Camilla, her younger brother Leo, and her younger sister Elise - were allowed to visit whenever they pleased. Corrin also had some vassals to take care of her as well, such as her maid Felicia, her butler Jakob, and her attendant Lilith, so Corrin wasn't totally alone.

Corrin has a bizarre dream of teaming up with four Hoshidans, who claim to be her brothers and sisters. Her Nohrian family arrive to rescue her from this group, after which the two elder brothers from the opposite sides argue for Corrin to join them. Corrin then wakes up from her dream, thanks to her maid, Felicia, calling out to her. Corrin has come of age, and now must prove to her father that she can take care of herself, or else she will be never be allowed to leave the Northern Fortress. Managing to defeat Xander, Corrin had proved herself, and was allowed to follow her siblings back to the Nohrian Capital, Windmire! Corrin's butler Jakob, her attendant Lilith, and her retainer Gunter also tag along.

Arriving at Castle Krakenburg, Corrin meets face-to-face with her father, King Garon. He congratulates her on passing her test, and presents her with a sword called Ganglari. With it, she can now help them in the war against Hoshido! Garon then wants her to test it out on some recently captured Hoshidan prisoners named Rinkah and Kaze. She manages to defeat them, after which Garon orders her to execute. Corrin refuses to do so, which has Garon order for Xander to do it. Corrin tries to stop him, only for Leo to use  a magic spell called Brynhildr on the prisoners while Corrin is distracted. Leo then asks for Garon to be merciful on Corrin's punishment.

Corrin is enraged by what Leo has done, only for Leo to reveal he only used enough power to knock the two out. Afterwards, Xander and Corrin secretly release the two outside the castle walls, though Rinkah swears revenge on Corrin.

Back at the castle, Garon decides to send Corin to inspect a nearby fortress near Hoshidan territory to see if it's serviceable. If Corrin accomplishes this, she will be pardoned for disobeying. Corrin accepts, and Garon assigns Hans to assist her, which worries Xander, as Hans was a criminal he arrested some years ago.

At the fortress, they find out that some Hoshido soldiers are still occupying it, who demand that they leave. Corrin decides to peacefully comply, but Hans rushes in and kills one of the Hoshidans, forcing Corrin into battle! After taking care of them, Corrin's brothers and sisters rush in, having secretly followed so they could help. However, since Hoshido reinforcements are quickly arriving, they decide to instead head back to the castle to report back to their father, only for Hans to show up again and shove Gunter off a cliff! Enraged, Corrin transforms her arm and demands Hans to tell her why he provoked the Hoshido soldiers, to which he responds that he was simply following her father's orders.

Before she can get more answers, she falls off the bridge they're on. Lilith jumps off the bridge after her, transforming into a dragon and quickly transporting the two of them to an Astral Plane. There, Lilith explains she was the "little bird" Corrin took care of back during Corrin's childhood. Lilith was grateful, and decided to take on human form so she can repay Corrin. She also explains that the Astral Plane is the home of the dragons, though no one lives here anymore. They rest for a bit, after which Corrin is sent back to the real world. However, she's quickly knocked out by Rinkah.

Waking up, Rinkah reveals she's handing her over to the Hoshidan authorities. Expecting to be executed, Corrin is surprised when a woman named Mikoto hugs her instead, claiming to be Corrin's mother! Mikoto's eldest son, Ryoma, explains to Corrin that she was kidnapped by King Garon long ago and that they have been hoping to rescue her ever since, though Corrin doesn't remember any of this, as her memories of the past are very vague.

Before he can elaborate, they are informed that a village to the north is under attack! Ryoma's little sisters, Hinoka and Sakura, are there helping to evacuate the villagers, thus Corrin heads with him to help. Taking care of the bizarre creatures called "The Faceless," Hinoka is happy to reunite with Corrin. Sakura, who was too young at the time to really know Corrin, is surprised that they managed to rescue her big sister she heard so much about.

Ryoma then tells Corrin that their mother is able to produce a magical barrier that makes many who enter it unable to fight. Thus, the people of Nohr created the Faceless, terrifying beings that have no soul, thus aren't affected by the barrier. This takes Corrin by surprise, as she never thought Nohr would do something so evil. Regardless, they can't stay here, so Ryoma leads them back home to the Castle Shirasagi.

At the castle, Mikoto tries to get Corrin to remember her past by showing Corrin her old bedroom, though Corrin is still unable to recall anything, even feeling a bit guilty about it. Corrin decides to go for a stroll around the castle, when she hears a mysterious song. The person singing is Azura, who introduces herself to Corrin, telling her that she was a former Nohrian Princess. She was kidnapped as retaliation for Garon kidnapping Corrin, and has lived most of her life in Hoshido. Azura relates with Corrin being unable to reconnect with her real family, noting that if she were to head back to Nohr, she'd probably see her family as strangers too. Regardless, Azura says she'd rather stay in Hoshido, as Queen Mikoto is much kinder than King Garon.

A few days later, the Hoshido family begin planning to reveal to the public that they managed to rescue their sister from Nohr. As they prepare, Corrin is introduced to her little brother, Takumi, who - compared to Ryoma, Hinoka, and Sakura - isn't as thrilled that Corrin has returned. Mikoto has Hinoka, Takumi, Sakura, and Azura give Corrin a tour of the area before the event so that she can familiarize herself with the surroundings.

During the celebration a mysterious man tried to assassinate Corrin using her own blade, Ganglari. Mikoto shields her daughter and takes the hit instead, and ends up perishing in Corrin's arms. Enraged, Corrin transforms into a feral dragon, and goes on a rampage against the assassins. With some help from Ryoma, they manage to take care of them, though Corrin is still rampaging. Azura begins to sing her song again to calm Corrin down, after which she reverts to normal.

Thanks to this incident, Corrin manages to recall her past. Corrin was with her real father, Sumeragi. Garon wanted to see him, as he wanted to have a truce between their kingdoms, only to betray him and kill Sumeragi. After that, Garon would take Corrin with him back to Nohr, raising her as his own daughter, though isolating her from the outside world.

She then makes sure that Azura was okay, before seeing what happened to the plaza. Takumi is enraged, claiming that Corrin was in cahoots with Nohr all along and was helping them assassinate not just their mother, but also some of the innocent people here. Mikoto's advisor, Yukimura, tries to defuse the situation by revealing that Mikoto foresaw her own death, but didn't know when it would happen.

He then points to a half-destroyed statue, that has a particular blade sticking out of the rubble. It is called the Yato Blade, a divine weapon that is said to carve a path to peace. It removes itself from the rubble and flies into Corrin's hand, choosing her to be its wielder!

But before anyone can celebrate, Ryoma receives news that the Nohr Army is approaching Hoshido! Ryoma heads off to rally the troops. Corrin wants to tag along, if only to stop the potential bloodshed. Azura is worried that Corrin may lose herself in her anger and turn into a dragon again, forever losing her humanity. To prevent this, she gives Corrin a Dragonstone, which will allow Corrin to easily switch between human and dragon. Azura then tells Corrin that she wants to prevent bloodshed as well, and follows her.

Rushing to meet with the Nohr Army first, Corrin finds Xander, who's reveals that he was sent by his father to conquer Hoshido and end this war. Camilla, Leo, and Elise have also tagged along, hoping to rescue Corrin and take her back to Nohr. Ryoma, Hinoka, Takumi, and Sakura arrive as well, and they - minus Takumi - try to convince Corrin to stay with her real family, and end Nohr's tyranny once and for all.

Corrin is left with a choice. Whatever the player picks branches the story into three separate paths: Birthright, Conquest, and Revelations.

In Birthright, Corrin chooses to side with Hoshido, telling Xander that she can't go back with him and his siblings. Garon has brought needless violence to the people of Hoshido, and have killed innocents as well. Not only that, but Garon simply used Corrin as a pawn to kill Queen Mikoto. Thus, she must help her true family avenge their mother, Mikoto, and put an end to Garon's cruelty. Corrin does offer Xander the chance to join her on her new quest, but he responds by attacking her, to which Ryoma and his siblings rush to her defense, driving the forces of Nohr away.

Corrin then heads off with the others to protect Hoshido, as well as find allies to help her stop Nohr. Along the way, thanks to getting into close contact with Takumi's and Ryoma's weapons, Corrin's Yato Blade slowly transforms; first into the Noble Yato, then the Blazing Yato!

Corrin also crosses paths with her former Nohr siblings as well. She tries to convince them to join her, but only Elise agrees to help. She's forced to battle the other three. Eventually, Takumi admits that Corrin is right about their father, but unable to bring himself to betray him, Takumi decides to just step aside instead, allowing Corrin to do what she must do. Corrin also manages to take Camilla as a prisoner, thus ensuring her safety in the war. Tragically, despite her best efforts, Elise and Xander end up dying in the climax of the story.

In the end, Corrin, her Hoshido family, and the Hoshido army manages to kill Garon, ending his reign of terror. Back at Castle Shiragari, Ryoma takes his place as the rightful ruler of Hoshido, and establishes a peace treaty with the kingdom of Nohr's new King, Leo. Afterwards, they throw a festival, as well as erect a statue to honor their fallen mother, Mikoto.

In Conquest, Corrin chooses to side with Nohr, telling Ryoma that she can't stay with him and his siblings. While she has found out that Nohr has done many vile things, she can't betray the only family she's ever known for most of her life. Ryoma tries to argue that Garon was simply using her to murder Mikoto, to which Corrin says she'd like to hear his side of the story. Ryoma then attacks Corrin, to which Xander and his siblings rush to her defense, driving the forces of Hoshido away.

Corrin and her Nohr siblings head back to Castle Krakenburg, where Garon is suspicious of Corrin's reasons for returning. Thus, he sends her on various missions to prove her loyalty, each one testing her faith and beliefs of preventing bloodshed. Along the way, thanks to getting in close contact with Leo's and Xander's weapons, Corrin's Yato Blade slowly transforms; first into the Grim Yato, then the Shadow Yato!

Garon tells Corrin to lead the invasion into Hoshido, where Corrin crosses paths with her Hoshido siblings. During this, Corrin manages to save Sakura by taking her in as a prisoner. After defeating Hinoka, Corrin tells her to run and hide somewhere safe, so that she can claim to Garon that she killed Hinoka. Tragically, Corrin isn't able to save Takumi, who decides to throw himself off of the building they were fighting on rather than be taken in as her prisoner. She tries to save Ryoma as well, but her father shows up and orders her to execute him. Ryoma decides to take his own life so that Corrin wouldn't live with the guilt of killing him.

Additionally, Corrin comes to realize just how cruel her adoptive father is. Corrin eventually finds out the reason for this is because he isn't Garon. He's a water demon masquerading as Garon! Once she exposes this to her Nohr siblings, they defeat him and end his reign of terror! Afterwards, Xander takes his place as the rightful ruler of Nohr, and establishes a peace treaty with the kingdom of Hoshido's new Queen, Hinoka..

In Revelations, Corrin chooses to side with neither of them, telling Xander and Ryoma that she refuses to fight them. When they refuse to listen and are about to go to war with each other, Corrin decides to defeat the two of them, as well as their siblings. Despite the odds, she manages to weaken them, but her actions get her labeled as a traitor on both sides! Azura, inspired by Corrin's refusal to take a side, rescues Corrin and her friends, after which Azura leads them to the Kingdom of Valla.

Their, Azura reveals the kingdom's secrets, such as the fact that she's actually the princess of Valla. However, a wicked man named Anankos killed her parents, took over the kingdom, and now seeks to destroy the world. To do so, he's been subtly influencing Garon to act on his orders. She then explains that she never told anyone because of a curse. Simply being told Anankos's plans places it on you, and if you dare to mention it outside the borders of Valla, you die.

Realizing who the true enemy of Hoshido and Nohr is, Corrin seeks to find a way to unite both sides of her family without being able to tell them the reason why. She attempts to do this by traveling through both nations, gathering forces and earning people's trust. Along the way, she comes across the Rainbow Sage, who transforms her Yato Blade into the Alpha Yato Blade.

Corrin eventually manages to get her siblings to help her, and she begins to lead them to Valla. Anticipating this, Anankos sends out his Army out to stop them, as well as setting up traps. Inside the castle, he even resurrects the dead body of the Hoshido Queen Mikoto! Though they are forced to kill her once more, she does reveal to Corrin that she isn't her mother. Corrin's true parents were members of the Valla kingdom!

In Anankos's throne room, Corrin's Alpha Yato Blade begins to resonate with Takumi's, Leo's, Ryoma's, and Xander's weapons, transforming it into the Omega Yato Blade, aka the Fire Emblem! Meanwhile, Anakos absorbs the fake water-demon Garon to regain his full power, allowing him to transform into a terrifying dragon! But with the help of her family, Corrin manages to defeat Anankos, and put an end to his vile plans!

Some time later, Corrin is crowned Queen of Valla. With some help from both her Hoshido and Nohr siblings, they manage to restore Valla to its former glory! After a while, Corrin and Azura head to the lake at Hoshido, where they first met. Corrin asks Azura if she's alright with her becoming Queen of Valla, since technically the kingdom is Azura's, but Azura assures Corrin that she's okay with that. Azura then, in her own special way to thank Corrin for all that she's done, sings Corrin her song, "Lost in Thoughts All Alone."

Personality-wise, Corrin deeply cares about people, and will apologize if she's upset anyone. She also tends to be a bit naive to how the world works and quickly trusts others, which many shadier characters take advantage of. On the flipside, kinder individuals are able to sense that she's being genuine, and thus are willing to help her out. Corrin also loves animals, and is skilled at playing piano and writing poetry. Corrin does dislike senseless violence, though.

Depending which story you're on also gives different shades of her personality. If you chose to side with Hoshido, Corrin becomes quite furious at Nohr's atrocities, but remains idealistic, always trying to find peaceful solutions like Mikoto did.

If you chose to side with Nohr, Corrin' slowly begins to doubt herself as she becomes unable to save the innocent Hoshido lives that are being taken by her father. Eventually, her idealistic outlook gets crushed entirely after witnessing Ryoma's death. However, near the end of her story, her confidence grows, and she begins to willingly use violence if she deems it necessary.

If you side with neither, Corrin struggles with the fact that she has to unite everyone without telling them why. However, her honesty shine through here, and many people choose to help her despite not knowing why she needs their help. By the end, she's able to sense deception, and thus isn't as easily tricked.

In Super Smash Bros., along with utilizing the legendary – and fully awakened – Omega Yato Blade, she can transform parts of her body into her dragon form! This gives her a unique fighting style compared to the others!

Special Moves

Neutral Special: Dragon Fang Shot

By holding the Special Button, Corrin transforms her hand into a draconic mouth and charges up a ball of water. Once it’s fully charged, Corrin will immediately fire it, though you can also fire it off sooner by releasing the Special Button. The speed and strength of the water ball depends on how much it was charged.

If the ball of water hits anyone, the opponent will get temporarily stunned. How long that stun is depends on how much you charge it.

After firing it, Corrin will clamp the draconic mouth on her opponent. You can also charge this up by pressing and holding the Special Button.

Inspired by the ability, Dragon Fang, in “Fire Emblem Fates.” It is obtainable in the Nohr Princess/Prince class, which is exclusive to Corrin and her son, Kana.

Dragon Fang adds 50% of their attack value to their damage output whenever it activates. If wielding a sword or a tome, Corrin or Kana transforms a part of their body into that of a dragon to attack, but only if they are in the Nohr Princess/Prince class, as well as its upgraded Hoshido/Nohr Noble versions.

The move comes from the final part of the Dragon Fang attack, in which Corrin or Kana transforms their free hand into a draconic mouth and fires either a shot of water (if wielding a sword) or a shot of magic. (if wielding a tome) After firing, the draconic mouth clamps down its jaws and retracts.

Side Special: Dragon Lunge

If Corrin is on the ground, using this move will have Corrin perform a small jump into the air. Regardless, pressing the Special Button again will have Corrin transform her hand into a spear-like object to skewer foes. The very tip of the spear is where she’ll do the most damage!

If she happens to stab the floor or a wall, Corrin will get stuck there for about 3 seconds. If any foe got hit during this, they’ll also get pinned.

While stuck on the floor, Corrin can follow up with either a forward flying kick or a backwards flying kick.

\Or she can slam the foe into the ground and fling herself upwards!

Regardless, she won’t be able to use Dragon Lunge again until she lands on the ground, grabs the ledge, or gets attacked.

Inspired by the ability, Dragon Fang, in “Fire Emblem Fates.” It is obtainable in the Nohr Princess class, which is exclusive to Corrin and her son, Kana.

This move comes from the second part of a Dragon Fang-induced critical hit, in which Corrin or Kana transform their free arm into a spear-like appendage and stabs the opponent while in the air on the rebound of a flipping slash.

Up Special: Dragon Ascent

Corrin activates Dragon Fang and sprouts wings. She flies upwards as some torrents of water appear around her. Anyone nearby will get dragged up with her before she uses her wings to whack everyone away!

You can angle her jump by moving the control stick. Backwards will have her fly higher, but with less horizontal momentum. Forwards will have her fly further ahead, but at the cost of vertical momentum. Not pressing either will have her fly at an in-between length.

Inspired by how Corrin will sprout wings to move around in the overworld map in "Fire Emblem Fate." Note that she only does this if she's in the Nohr Princess class, as well as it's upgraded Hoshido/Nohr Noble version.

Down Special: Counter Surge

Corrin gets in a defensive stance. If anyone happens to attack her while she’s in this stance...

...Corrin counters by transforming into a dragon and splashing water around her, sending anyone nearby flying upwards!

Inspired by the core element of the Fire Emblem games. When a foe attacks the player’s unit, the unit will retaliate if they are equipped with a weapon that has a compatible range. (example: if the foe attacks your unit up close and your unit is holding a sword, they can counter; if the foe attacks from afar and your unit is holding a sword, they can’t because the foe is too far away) This also applies vice-versa when the player’s unit attacks a foe. Neither will retaliate if their HP drops to 0, in which case they are defeated.

In “Fire Emblem Fates,” Corrin can learn the Counter skill by reclassing into the Oni Chieftain class. Corrin's use of her dragon form is reminiscent of the attack pattern she uses when equipped with a Dragonstone.

Final Smash: Torrential Roar

Corrin partially transforms into a Dragon and punches the ground, which causes two geysers of light to emerge in front of her and behind her. Anyone that gets hit gets sent to a mountain range, where Corrin fully transforms into a dragon!

She then fires a huge whirlpool of water at her foes, which sends them flying away!

If the geysers of light fail to hit anyone, the move does nothing.

Inspired by Corrin's ability to turn into a dragon in "Fire Emblem Fates."

Her ability to use water may be inspired by Azura’s ability to use hydrokinesis - thanks to the necklace she wears - in “Fire Emblem Fates.” Azura is the deuteragonist in the game, and plays an important role in all three story routes.

The move may also be inspired by Anankos's ability to use hydrokinesis. Anankos is the main antagonist of the game's Revelations Route.

Alternatively, it may be based on the fact that, while Corrin is in her Dragon form, water flows from her feet.

Additional Notes

You can also play as male Corrin if you want! Just like female Corrin, Super Smash Bros. goes with his default look. (Young adult.) Technically he’s the default Corrin to play as in the game, but it seems even Nintendo feels like they should’ve had female Corrin be the default one, as she’s the one present on the Classic Mode Mural near the middle between Link and Donkey Kong instead of male Corrin. (and note that every other character that has an alternate costume or alternate gender uses their default look/appearance there) Male Corrin’s story is similar to female Corrin’s, with the main differences being that his maid Felicia tags along with him instead of his butler Jakob, as well male Corrin having different marriage candidates.

Speaking of which, while male Corrin can marry any of the women in the army – and Niles – in-game evidence suggests he gets together with Azura, such as Azura having unique confessions depending on the route, different support chains with him, and Azura being the one Corrin can support with the fastest.

And of course, Female Corrin can marry any of the men in the army, as well as Rhajat. However, there doesn’t seem to be any in-game evidence on who she’s most likely to marry, though the Crown of Nibelungen manga and a Drama CD seem to hint at Leo.

Left-to-right: Azura, Rhajat, and Caeldori.
Speaking of Rhajat, she heavily implies that she is an incarnation of Tharja, as well as implies that Corrin may be an incarnation of Robin from "Fire Emblem Awakening." Assuming it's true, then in addition to Azura, this also opens up the possibility that Corrin may have gotten together with Rhajat or Caeldori. (who's implied to be an incarnation of Cordelia, also from Fire Emblem Awakening.)

Left-to-right: Leo, Rhajat, and Asugi.
As for female Corrin, in addition to Leo and Rhajat, she may have gotten together with Asugi. (who's implied to be an incarnation of Gaius, also from Fire Emblem Awakening.)

Corrin also has a kid associated with them, Kana! Kana only shows up if Corrin marries someone of the opposite gender. Female Corrin has male Kana, and male Corrin has female Kana.

When it comes to the three branching storylines, male Corrin is associated with the Hoshido path, and female Corrin with the Nohr path. When it comes to not picking a side, it's either one of them.
