Final Fantasy's Sephiroth Joins The Battle

Final Fantasy's Sephiroth Joins The Battle!

Yesterday at The Game Awards, Nintendo revealed the 78th fighter who will join Super Smash Bros., Sephiroth from the Final Fantasy series!

Sephiroth is the main antagonist of Final Fantasy VII, as well as Final Fantasy VII Remake. Initially praised as a hero and world-renowned as "the SOLDIER Hero", things went downhill when his two closest friends betrayed him, and when he discovered he was an experiment by the Shinra Company to create super soldiers. Following an encounter with Cloud, resulting in Sephiroth getting stabbed in the back and falling into a pool of mako, Sephiroth would re-emerge five years later, where he plans to find the Black Materia so that he can cast Meteor, a powerful and dangerous spell that will badly damage the planet, forcing it to use the Lifestream to heal its wounds. When the planet does that, Sephiroth plans to quickly rush in and absorb the Lifestream, allowing him to become a god and rule the planet.

When it comes to moveset, Sephiroth is shown using his sword, the Masamune, to slash his foes. It also appears he's able to stab his sword into walls and stick there for a few seconds, where he can then fling himself upwards if he wants to. He can also summon dark spheres to surround the opponent, after which they explode a bit later. He also appears to have a counter attack that resembles Scintilla from Dissidia Final Fantasy. Additionally, his down-air attack, which is a downward stab where he falls at incredible speeds, seems to be based on the infamous scene where he stabs Aerith.

Sephiroth is also shown to be able to materialize his wing. While it's currently unknown how this is accomplished, it seems when he does, some of his moves are changed.

What may be his Final Smash was also teased in the final parts of the video, where he transforms into Safer∙Sephiroth, a form he takes on during the final battle against him.

Nintendo is later planning on holding a separate direct on 12/17 at 2pm PT to fully showcase Sephiroth's moveset.

Sephiroth is part of the Fighter Pass Vol. 2 for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and will be available to purchase for $5.99 (in the US) or $7.55 (in Canada). One can also purchase the full Fighter Pass Vol. 2 for $29.99 (US) or $37.79 (Canada), which, in addition to coming with Sephiroth, also comes with the previous two DLC Fighters Min Min (from ARMS) and Steve (from Minecraft) as well as three future DLC fighters who will be revealed later on, and a costume for your Mii Sword Fighter, the Ancient Soldier Gear from "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild."
